The recent return of some apex predators create challenges for the conservation of the predator, their natural prey, and livestock. In the Baltic, the white-tailed eagle has made an astonishing come-back, reshaping the food webs established during its absence. I am interested in the effects of the return of the white-tailed eagle on its prey species and the feeding ecology of the eagle, as well as on the connections between the breeding territory of the eagles and their diet on the eagle itself.
In my PhD-thesis I investigate 1) the spatial and temporal changes of white-tailed eagle prey species in the Åland Islands archipelago, 2) the connections between diet and breeding habitat in Lapland (Arctic inland) with potential threats to the traditional reindeer herding in the area, 3) the reasons for elevated Hg levels in the white-tailed eagles in Lapland; and 4) the effects of the white-tailed eagle on the rapidly declining population of eiders in the Finnish archipelago.
I am also working on a project of the Osprey foundation investigating the role of the white-tailed eagle on the reindeer calf losses in Lapland.
